Voice Recognition

Where the tech world is headed is voice recognition.  What does this mean?

Yes you’re already able to ask Siri where the closest Thai restaurant is and how to find your way to some Google map location.  But that’s expected.

What it means is that you’ll be able to stop pounding out massive text on your keyboard.  You can just say it.  This technology is already here.  In fact, it’s been here for probably over a decade or more.  And it’s gotten really, really good.

What it does is convert speech to text.

We see this as the answer to the less than optimal keyboard operations on tablets and smaller devices.  We also see it as a natural extension of our interactions with technology.

Highest recommended?  Dragon Naturally Speaking.  And they have specialized modules geared toward your industry.

Price?  Maybe $100-500, depending on your needs.  It’s well worth it.

Hmmmm…. are we thinking holiday gifts??

Happy computing!

Solar Flares and Technology

Okay, this might be a bit of geeky science but Monday the sun emitted a solar flare which will cause the largest solar radiation storm since 2005.

We’ll probably see the effects today.

The most major concern is GPS systems which are often satellite-based, but also some communication systems. Aircraft are being rerouted to avoid interference.

Why should you care? Even as our technology races forward, it’s always susceptible to Mama Nature.  Most of us don’t connect the idea of our laptop with the greater concepts of physics and environment. But since our businesses rely on IT continuity, if you have mission-critical servers or can’t function without computers, plan ahead for disruptions. Many businesses don’t but they lose revenue in the lack of foresight.

So it’s always wise to have a well thought out plan of what to do when your systems go down. Do you have one?

Give us a call if you don’t – we can help you out.

Happy computing!

Inexpensive Technology?

With all the sales prices, you can see how inexpensive technology has become – reasonable PC and laptop prices and even tablets and smartphones are in the mix!  What we want you to be aware of is that the sale items from the nearby Big Box store have a lot of great deals.  But they’re geared toward the consumer market.  In business, the primary factor is reliability.  When you come into the office in the morning, does everything work the way it should and you don’t even have to think about it?

We covered the basic specs a number of weeks ago but the sales are on, and they’ll look impossible to pass up, let’s review.  You need to get:

1)      An i5 processor

2)      6GB of RAM memory

3)      500GB hard drive

4)      Windows 7 Professional

Have a great holiday season – and happy computing!
