New Technology – Face Your Demons!

Computers.  Internet.  Social Media.  *Shudder!*… scary as a demon in a dark basement!

We have two months to the close of 2011.  Then we will all be boldly stating our often ineffective New Year’s Resolutions.  Let’s get a jump onthe game in the fast moving world of technology!

Starting today, commit to buying a smartphone or tablet.  Or commit to learning a piece of the social media network! Just one piece.  FaceBook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.  Face your demons!

By New Year’s Day, you will be ahead of the game and ready to take on the next piece.  if you are ready to face your demons, we can help you move forward into the scary world of technology.  Consider us your exorcist!

SmartPhones = Efficiency & Marketing

Smartphones change how you do business.  As I mentioned in the last post, you should have them help increase your bottom line! There are at least 4 major business functions that Smartphones can streamline.  Communication and Organization you read about here last week – the second two are Efficiency and Marketing:

Efficiency (Time)

  • Dr. Seuss’s “Oh! The places you’ll go.”  You’ve all read it I’m sure.  We’ll there’s a couple pages dedicated to something we’re all familiar with:  The Waiting Place.  Get familiar with turning that 15-20 minutes of waiting time into answering emails, sending directions or new ideas back to the home office.
  • Need to keep field technicians on schedule?  If your industry-specific software doesn’t have a mobile app, they soon will.  Meanwhile the built-in calendars and links to your mail server’s calendar keep the day flowing smoothly.
  • GPS.  Global Positioning System.  Use for example Google’s Navigator app in place of your GPS but also to calculate distances/time for travel to client meetings or jobs.  Can also help you provide more accurate estimates of job costs while in the field.
  • Use Bar Code and QR Code apps to quickly research or convey information about products, both yours and competitors.  You do have and use QR Codes, right ?

Marketing

  • Check out your own website on a Smartphone.  Does it look good and is it easy to navigate?  It should, because mobile lookups on your business are surging to the lead in all first impressions by potential clients.
  • Update your company Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. while onsite or in The Waiting Place.
  • Video or snap a pic of a job you just arrived at.  Upload to Youtube or PhotoBucket with a comment like “Jumpin’ horse feathers! Look at this!”  Keep recording at key points along the wayand then upload the finished product straight to your Social Media sites.
  • Invite your clients to participate and comment in the online “process” of your service.  It builds a sense of membership and loyalty.  Plus it can be kind of fun!

Smartphones change how you do business.  Make them increase your bottom line – there are at least 4 major business functions that Smartphones can streamline.  Here are the first two!

Communication

  • Surprisingly enough, a Smartphone still drags along the 19th century capability of holding a conversation with someone else who is somewhere else.
  • Email is one of the heavy hitters on Smartphones, configuration is relatively pain-free.  Just ask a teenager.  Mostly I use this to respond to what is both Urgent AND Important, leave the rest for your regular computer.
  • Text and Chat enjoy a somewhat blurry co-existence but both allow discreet and immediate communication.
  • Many Smartphones come with the ability to translate voice into text so you needn’t have such nimble fingers.
  • Hey, the Internet is right there.  Research anything at the tip of a finger.  No need to pull out a bulky laptop.
  • Back to eMail for a sec.  We assume you have a “question” section on your website.  Potential customers assume there’s a person in your company just waiting to respond to a question.  Have those sent to your phone and you can present a much more “big company” image by answering quickly.

Organization

  • Your calendar is right there, and the Smartphone is reminding you of what’s next.
  • Your contacts are right there, email and phone.
  • Document managing apps let you take important spreadsheets, presentations and contracts, invoices and work orders “to go”.  And they can often be printed in the field or onsite.
  • You can even take signatures right on your phone.
  • Dictate notes to your Smartphone, record spontaneous totally awesome ideas so they don’t fade away as the next shiny object grabs your attention.
