Why defrag your computer?

Should I defragment my PC? Most PC owners have heard of defragmenting their hard drive, but what does it actually do and is it necessary?

Think of your hard drive as a huge file cabinet. The more files you have, the more you add, and the more they are accessed the more disorganized they can become. So, the computer will take longer to find the file you are looking for. Defragmenting goes through and organizes the files in an efficient way so the computer can access them faster.

If you own an older computer that runs Windows XP, then yes, you should run a disk defrag once per month (or more if your so inclined). To do this click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Select the C: drive and click the Defrag button to start. The process can take a while if it has never been done before.  Remember, you need at least 15% free space or Disk Defragmenter will not run.

For you Windows Vista / 7 users, disk defragmenter is already scheduled for you by default to run once per week. You do not need to do anything further.

Happy computing!

Viruses On Your Computer!

Here’s the thing about viruses.  They are a pain in the rear to most everyone trying to get business done.

But there’s more to it.

It used to be that malware and viruses were just annoying, and sometimes malicious like deleting files or making your machine go wonky.  But today it’s more like organized crime.  That email you got from some far away place?  There’s probably a 16 floor high-tech high-rise behind that email.  Vice Presidents and Project Managers, etc.  fine tuning the verbiage and income stream.  It’s not just some geek in in his basement with glasses and bad acne, who happened upon a weakness in the system.

If you’re up at all on current tech events (you shouldn’t have to be, leave that to us) you’d know that even in the U.S. there are entire corporations built on exploiting security holes.   It’s big business.  And they are seeing quite a healthy bottom line each year.  These organizations mostly go after the low hanging fruit of unprotected systems. Stay protected – be sure your anti-virus is up to date, and remember you get what you pay for!

CW can help you get to the top of the tree, where most hackers won’t bother to reach.

Slow Computer Fix

“Why is my computer running so slowly???”

Every time someone tells us that their computer is bogging down, it’s too slow, it’s not like it used to be, we ask them how much memory (or RAM) they have.  Usually, they don’t have enough.

Most everyone equates RAM with the amount of stuff they have on their computer.  Too many pictures, too many downloaded programs and all that.   But it’s not the same thing.  That’s storage space.  Think of it like this:

Storage = Hard disk space =  is all your pictures and documents and music and email.   THIS HAS VERY LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SPEED OF YOUR MACHINE.

RAM is what your computer can think about all at once.  Like trying to remember a dozen phone numbers or recipes.

It’s short term memory.  And it’s contained on a usually inexpensive “chip”.

This is the SINGLE BEST UPGRADE you can make to your machine.

Our minimum recommendations are:

 XP – 2 Gigabytes

Windows Vista – 4 Gigabytes

Windows 7 – 4 Gigabytes
